About the Author
I was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico and spent my high school years in Isla Verde, in the San Juan metro area. In 1975 my family moved to the United States and I have lived there ever since. I initially lived in New Jersey, where I completed college studies in natural resources management and a masters in city and regional planning at Rutgers University. Eventually I completed a doctorate in energy managmement and policy from the University of Pennsylvania. My disertation work took me to the highlands of Mexico to study the production efficiency of traditional peasant farmers. After a few years in South Florida I moved with my wife and children to our current locaton in Ithaca, NY.
I've had a life long interest in nature and history, particularly the early days of the Spanish conquest of Puerto Rico and the period of interaction with the indigenous Taíno population. This interest is reflected in Dos Santos, which incorporates much of what I have learned researching the history of that time period. One of the main purposes of Dos Santos is to present the readers with the events and conditions in the island of Borikén in the early 1500's in what is, hopefully, an entertaining and engaging format.
There is much to learn from the first peoples of the world; no less from the Taínos. I hope the resources continue to be made available to advance the study of Taíno culture. I am certain we will learn much if we pay attention.
I hope you enjoy Dos Santos.
Gracias por la visita.
Fernando
